What a spreadsheet does well
- Total freedom: any column, any formula, any chart.
- It is your file, it works offline and it costs nothing.
- Custom calculations — dosing, water-change volumes, your own targets — are easy.
- Anyone can open it.
Side by side
| What you need | A spreadsheet | BioSensei today |
|---|---|---|
| Record a test-kit reading | Yes, in a layout you design | Yes — fields matched to the habitat type (15 types), about thirty seconds on a phone |
| Live probe readings | Only if you build an import yourself | Zigbee probes report about every ten minutes into the same history as your manual entries |
| Know when a value is old | You check the date yourself | Every sensor value is marked live, recent, stale, offline or suspect |
| A reading that looks wrong | Conditional formatting you set up | A reading marked suspect is shown as “verify”, never as an environmental alarm |
| Which habitat needs you first | You compare tabs yourself | Ecosystem cards are ordered by priority; each says why, shows the evidence and what to check first |
| Hand over to a pet-sitter | Share the file and explain it | “Copy for caretaker” produces a plain-language brief with status, evidence and check-first steps |
| Make sense of the numbers | Your own knowledge, forums | Optional Dr BioSensei analysis with your own AI key — labelled as interpretation, not measurement |
| Get your data out | It already is a file | CSV export of each ecosystem’s full history from the Logger |
| Cost | Free | Free during the current launch phase; no subscription |

When to keep your spreadsheet
- You rely on custom formulas or dosing calculators.
- You need to work fully offline.
- You track very unusual parameters or want complete control over the layout.
- You can use both: export CSV from BioSensei and paste it into your sheet.
What BioSensei does not claim
- It does not guarantee that a sensor is accurate — it shows how fresh and how plausible a reading is, so you know when to re-test.
- Its reference ranges are general aquatic ranges, not species-specific targets.
- The Vet tab organises observations; it is not a diagnosis and does not replace a qualified vet.
Can BioSensei replace my aquarium spreadsheet?
For many keepers, yes for day-to-day logging, freshness and priorities; keep your spreadsheet if you rely on custom formulas. You can export BioSensei’s history to CSV at any time.
Can I get my BioSensei data into a spreadsheet?
Yes. Each ecosystem’s Logger exports its full history as a CSV file that any spreadsheet can open.
Does BioSensei cost money?
It is free to use during the current launch phase, with no subscription. Optional AI features use your own API key.
